Despite being funded by public money the Royal Mail did not consult in any meaningful with local residents, businesses or other users.
No notice was given or any views taken from anyone locally.
Even the local post office counter staff did not know about it when it was announced.
They found out from their local postman!
The Royal Mail wrote to Basingstoke and Dean (sic) Borough Council stating that "a decision has been taken to transfer the operation from Whitchurch..."

The Sorting Office is an essential Community Amenity and it has been ripped away from us.
Where did accountability to their customers disappear to?

One Whitchurch resident asked:
"Do you...fancy travelling to Basingstoke to pick up an undelivered parcel? Anyone working 8 to 5 can get to our sorting office prior to work. If it's in Basingstoke, there's no way."

For a film of the last sad day ....

The Royal Mail is part of the fabric of the country and the lives of the millions of people who use it every day.

Uniquely it has the network of people and sorting offices spanning the country that can deliver to every household and business at one price, six days a week.

Is closing the local amenity the way to maintain this?
